History

Henry Ford Health, founded in 1915 by auto pioneer Henry Ford, has grown into one of the nation’s leading comprehensive and integrated health care systems. For more than a century, the institution and the Henry Ford Medical Group have contributed to advancements in medicine through leadership in clinical care, education, and research. We are one of the largest U.S. teaching hospitals in the country, training over 1,000 residents and fellows each year in 109 accredited programs. Through our partnership with Wayne State University School of Medicine since 2002 and Michigan State University since 2021, we also help train and educate over 500 medical students each year.

Henry Ford Health, located primarily in Southeast Michigan, is comprised of 13 hospitals and more than 550 sites of care, employing over 50,000 team members. The Henry Ford Medical group – one of the largest and most experienced group practices in the nation, with 2,600 physicians, APPs, and researchers representing a multitude of specialties, and fostering innovation and advancement in patient care, education, and research. Our medical group is ranked in the 99th percentile of all group practices. We are one of the largest post-graduate medical education enterprises in the country, with one-third of all physicians in the state of Michigan having received training at Henry Ford. Additionally, Henry Ford is in the top 6% of National Institutes of Health-funded institutions.

Henry Ford Hospital, the system’s flagship, in Detroit is an 881-bed quaternary care hospital, education and research complex. It is an ACS-verified Level 1 Trauma Center and has been recognized for clinical excellence and innovation in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, sports medicine, multi-organ transplants, and various cancer treatments. It has also been designated a Magnet®️ hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, recognizing nursing excellence in patient care.

Henry Ford Hospital has 156 ICU beds, making it the largest ICU facility in Michigan and one of the largest in the country, with 68 medical, 40 surgical, 32 cardiovascular/cardiothoracic, and 16 neurology/neurosurgical ICU beds. The institution also offers critical care fellowship programs in anesthesiology, pulmonary, emergency medicine, EM/IM, nephrology, and neurosurgery/neuro-critical care, creating a rich learning environment for all of the critical care fellows across this breadth of expertise.
