Educational Curriculum & Conferences

A robust, structured didactic curriculum is offered to create a rich educational environment, including lectures, selected readings, hands-on courses, journal club, and M&M conference.

• Book Chapter Review/Journal Club: For fellow lectures, the assigned fellow will present a review on a critical care topic based on the ‘Parrillo: Critical Care Medicine’ textbook assigned chapter(s) in collaboration with a designated staff moderator. Various formats can be used based per the fellow’s choosing, including PowerPoint presentations, board review questions, point-counterpoint discussions, article presentations, or a combination of formats. For Journal Club sessions, landmark and current papers in various critical care topics are presented by the fellows, again with an assigned staff moderator to guide the discussions. This allows us to continually evaluate the latest literature and provide evidence-based care to our critically ill and injured patients. (weekly, one hour)
• Staff Conference: Faculty from multiple critical care departments, and other specialties (Cardiology, Pulmonary Hypertension, Nephrology, Infectious Disease), give lectures on a diverse array of critical care topics, pathophysiology, cutting edge treatments, and evidence-based management of critical care conditions. Towards the end of the academic year, staff will present and discuss board review questions with the fellows on a different topic each week. (weekly, one hour)
• SICU M&M: Fellows will present selected cases for review, which are discussed with the faculty and other fellows. This important conference is designed to promote an educational discussion of each case and review of the current literature. (monthly, October–July)
• Critical Care Grand Rounds: Hospital-wide lecture series for all critical care fellowship program trainees on various topics in critical care medicine. (weekly, one hour)
• Ultrasound Curriculum: 12-week course with didactics and simulation in POCUS. (August–Nov/Dec; weekly, one hour). In the second half of the year, there is an advanced ECHO lecture series incorporated into the weekly didactic sessions.
• ECMO Curriculum: two 1-hour sessions are held with the fellows by one of the ECMO perfusionists and educators, ranging from the basics of ECMO to advanced issues and management of complications.
• Research Meeting: Monthly research meeting among fellows and staff to generate research project ideas, monitor progress, review data and help guide the fellows to project completion. One written manuscript required at end of year. As a fellow, you have access to medical library resources, as well as medical writing and statistical support services. (monthly)
• Regional/National Conferences: The fellowship program sponsors attendance at the annual SCCM Clinical Congress as well as the local Detroit Trauma Symposium for the fellows.
• Educational Materials: The program provides each fellow with 2 critical care textbooks, 2 board review question books, 1 ICU ultrasound book, and access to the online SCORE curriculum in Surgical Critical Care at the start of the academic year. In addition to this, each fellow is given a Professional Development Fund of $1,500 by the GME office.
• In-Service Exam: Fellows take the SCCM MCCKAP exam annually (typically in March)
• Optional Conferences: Department of Surgery M&M, Department of Surgery Grand Rounds, Trauma/Acute Care Surgery M&M, Trauma Peer Review, Institutional Trauma Committee Meeting.
