Sports physical therapy can benefit anyone who is active, plays sports or who has a physically demanding job, such as firefighters, law enforcement and military. Our sports therapists evaluate how your injury is affecting your life and your work. We also provide preventive sports medicine and consulting services, acting as health advisors and providing first aid to area high school and collegiate teams.

FAQs about sports physical therapy at Henry Ford Health

  • What Conditions Do Your Sports Therapists Treat?

Our sports physical therapists treat a full range of musculoskeletal injuries caused by sports, exercise or job-related tasks, including:

  • What Sports Therapy Treatments Do You Offer?
    • Manual therapy: With hand-on therapy, your sports physical therapist moves, stretches and massages soft tissues and joints. This can reduce pain sensitivity and inflammation, helping you recover from surgery and injuries.
    • Blood flow restriction training: A specialized cuff restricts blood flow to certain muscle groups during exercise or therapy. This technique helps improve strength while minimizing wear and tear on the muscle.
    • FITLIGHT® training: A wireless reaction-timing system helps you improve speed, agility and power. Our sports therapists create sport-specific performance training plans.
    • Rest and recovery: We help you optimize the time between sports therapy sessions by giving you comprehensive rest and recovery plans. These plans may include cold, heat or compression therapy techniques. We also have an anti-gravity treadmill to ease you back into physical activity as you heal.
  • What Do I Need to Start Sports Physical Therapy?
    • Get a referral: A referral for sports physical therapy that’s dated and has been signed by a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner within the last 90 days.
    • Make an appointment: With this referral, you can schedule an appointment by calling one of our locations, or through your Henry Ford MyChart account.
    • Provide your information: Either way, our team will gather information from you about your condition and referring provider, and will also verify your insurance coverage.
    • Start your sports therapy: Then you’ll be paired with the most appropriate specialist for your needs and start your sports physical therapy.
