Adult Headache Rotation Overview
The Adult Headache Clinic rotation provides advanced training in the diagnosis and management of primary and secondary headache disorders. Fellows develop expertise in comprehensive headache care, procedural interventions, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centered management using evidence-based and guideline-driven approaches.
Educational Goals & Objectives
By the completion of the fellowship, fellows will be able to:
- Accurately diagnose primary and secondary headache disorders using ICHD-3 criteria.
- Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans for complex headache patients.
- Perform and interpret headache-related procedures safely and effectively.
- Manage refractory and chronic headache disorders in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Integrate behavioral, lifestyle, and preventive strategies into headache management.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.
Clinical Experience Structure
Continuity Clinic
- Frequency: 1–2 half-days per week
- Setting: Outpatient Adult Headache Clinic
- Patient Mix:
- Migraine (episodic and chronic)
- Tension-type headache
- Cluster headache and TACs
- New daily persistent headache
- Secondary headaches
- Post-traumatic headache
Pediatric Headache Rotation Overview
The Pediatric Headache Clinic rotation provides fellows with focused training in the evaluation and management of headache disorders in children and adolescents. Emphasis is placed on age-appropriate diagnosis, family-centered care, safe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment strategies, and coordination with pediatric subspecialties and schools.
Educational Goals & Objectives
By the completion of the fellowship, fellows will be able to:
- Diagnose pediatric headache disorders using ICHD-3 criteria with age-specific considerations.
- Differentiate primary headache disorders from secondary causes in children.
- Develop safe, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to pediatric patients.
- Integrate family-centered counseling and shared decision-making into care.
- Recognize psychosocial, developmental, and school-related factors affecting headache.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary pediatric teams to optimize outcomes.
Clinical Experience
Patient Population
- Migraine (episodic and chronic)
- Tension-type headache
- New daily persistent headache
- Post-traumatic headache / concussion-related headache
- Secondary headaches
- Headache in children with comorbid anxiety, ADHD, depression, or sleep disorders
Clinical Responsibilities
- New patient evaluations
- Longitudinal follow-up visits
- Headache diary review
- Medication management and counseling
- Family and caregiver education
Rotation Duration
- Length: longitudinal half-day clinic every other week.
- Setting: Outpatient Pediatric Headache Clinic – West Bloomfield Hospital
- Supervision: Pediatric Neurology / Pediatric Headache Faculty
