Biographical Statement
Dr. Valeriote is a senior scientist in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology at Henry Ford. He also is a professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Michigan State University.
His research focuses on the discovery and development of anticancer compounds from natural products – plants and marine organisms. His laboratory carries out both in vitro (tissue culture) and in vivo studies including tumor-bearing hosts to provide critical data necessary for translation into clinical protocols. His studies rely upon extensive international and national collaborations with medicinal and synthetic chemists as well as biochemists and molecular biologists working on mechanisms of action.
Research Interests
- Assessment of plant and marine organism extracts to both identify and develop anticancer agents. Ongoing studies involve new compounds from sponges collected in Antarctica, proteasome inhibitors, including carmaphycins for pancreatic cancer and majusculamide analogs for ovarian cancer.
- Development of platanosides for treatment of resistant bacteria.
- Assessment of carbohydrate-directed anticancer vaccines.
- Development of radiation protective drugs for radiation oncology treatments and radiation mitigators war, terrorist attacks and nuclear energy plant accidents.
