Curriculum

The Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited program that provides comprehensive training in the evaluation and management of patients with advanced heart failure. Our fellowship program offers exposure to the entire spectrum of heart failure amongst a variety of clinical settings from outpatients to ICU that covers:

• Advanced Heart Failure
• Cardiogenic Shock
• Temporary (ECMO, Impella, Tandem, IABP) and Durable Mechanical Circulatory Support
• Heart Transplantation

In addition, a unique aspect of our training includes management of multi-organ transplant (heart-kidney, heart-liver, heart-lung) and specialized cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, and cardio-oncology.

At Henry Ford Hospital, fellows have ample exposure in the catheterization lab to heart catheterization, LVAD Ramp studies, endomyocardial biopsies, CardioMEMS implantation, and exercise right heart catheterization.

Fellows receive additional training while rotating with other specialties such as transplant infectious diseases, pulmonary hypertension, palliative care, immunology. Formal didactics are offered throughout the year including conferences, journal clubs, multidisciplinary hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sarcoidosis conferences, mechanical support conferences amongst others.

The program also emphasizes clinical excellence, scholarly activity and leadership development to prepare graduates for careers in academic or community based on advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. As such, all fellows participate in an original research project and quality improvement projects. Interested fellows can participate in ongoing national clinical trials in heart failure.
